What is Sesame Seeds?

Sesame is a flowering plant in the genus Sesamum, also called benne. Numerous wild relatives occur in Africa and a smaller number in India. It is widely naturalized in tropical regions around the world and is cultivated for its edible seeds, which grow in pods or "buns“

Sesame seed is one of the oldest oilseed crops known, domesticated well over 3000 years ago.

Sesame has one of the highest oil contents of any seed. With a rich, nutty flavor, it is a common ingredient in cuisines across the world.

Source of Sesame Seeds

In 2013, world production of sesame seeds was 4.2 million tonnes, led by India and mainland China.

One of the largest producers of the crop is Sudan, with a record of over 0.7 million tons on year 2013

Specification Data Sheet

This Sudanese standard is formulated by the technical committee No.4 formed according to the administrative decree of the SSM0/1/A/Idated 18/8/01. It applies to Sesame Seeds. On formulating this standard the committee has referred to international publications and works of Sudanese researchers on the subject.

White sesame (Gadarif Region Production):

These are the seeds of which the external shells color varies from white to yellowish white, provided that the colored seeds may not exceed 5%

Mixed Sesame:

These are whitish sesame seeds which contain a maximum 25% of colored seeds.

Brown (red) sesame :

These are the seeds of which the external shells color varies from golden to brownish, and may contain 26% or more of colored seeds.

Difference Between White, Mixed, Brown Sesame

Sesame seeds come in different colors. Each type has different oil content:

All these types are mainly found in two forms:

Whole sesame seeds are rich in several types of vitamins B, dietary minerals, especially iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, and zinc

Sesame seeds contain 20% vitamin B

Sesame Seeds exporting process

  • We pack our sesame in 50 kg polypropylene (PP) bags.
  • We load the 20 feet containers with up to 19 metric tons of the sesame seeds.
  • The minimum order quantity (20ft FCL) takes a period of 10 to 15 days to be on board of the vessel, this period varies depending on the quantity ordered.
  • The port of loading is PORTSUDAN (SDPZU), with a possibility to re-export from other nearby ports in the middle east.
  • Lead time to reach the clients desired port depends on the shipping lines used and the destination to that port, usually varies between 2 to 8 weeks for the farthest destination.
  • The H.S code for the sesame seeds is 12074090 (*)
  • Payment terms and documents provided along with the shipment are mentioned at the products main page **(please check)
  • Sudanese sesame is falling among the products which the US sanctions against Sudan has not exempted, therefore cannot be exported directly from PORTSUDAN to the US market unless obtaining a special OFAC license.
