Peanuts & Aflatoxin

If peanut plants are subjected to severe drought during pod formation, or if pods are not properly stored, they may become contaminated with Aflatoxins

Aflatoxins are poisonous and cancer-causing chemicals that are produced by certain molds (Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus) which grow in soil, decaying vegetation, hay, and grains.

FDA set an action level for aflatoxins at 20 ppb to 300 ppb (parts per billion)for all foods, including animal feeds.

Aflatoxins are most commonly ingested, but the most toxic type of aflatoxin, B1, can permeate through the skin.
